::: ALOPECIA AREATA
 |
Definition
: An auto-immune disease of hair. It is a mild patchy
hair loss on the scalp; a number of small patches in an area
of the scalp develop and eventually joining up to form larger
patches. The skin in the patch is smooth, pale and glossy;
with no hairs present at all. |
Cause :
The body’s immune system acts as if the follicles are ‘foreign’
and attack them. White blood cells (T-lymphocytes attack hair follicles;
causes the hair to stop growing and enter into the telogen (resting)
phase. Usually in about 3 months later, when the resting phase is
over, the hair will fall out drastically. This is also known as
‘loose anagen’ where the follicles turn weak and loose.
This problem can be caused by trauma to skin, vaccination, viral
infections, unbearable stress, over depressed or even over excited;
happens among female or even children.
Symptom : Initially
appearing as rounded bare patch about an inch across. The hairs
around the patch are usually short and of a frayed appearance; with
loosed hair roots as the hairs can be easily pulled out.
